<b>22 May 2011:</b> Thank you Angus who sponsored last Sunday and opted for a 60 metre brace. This is the type of event handicappers chose when they want people more in the water and less asking questions - the swimming equivalent of the ‘who can be quiet for the longest’ game. The day ended with another afternoon of relaxing in the park, and Col ducking back and forth between presentations in the surf club and the park. Peter Ryan put in his first swim down at Splashers for the season and Andrew has started his campaign to spend lots of time on the stage again at this year’s presentation day. There were some defections over to Bondi for the Bondi Bluewater challenge – where Gayle and Ginny took out first and second place in their age categories respectively. Well done to them. Thanks to Sally Turner who submitted the attached photo of Adrian Rose – all members, winners or otherwise, encouraged to submit items of interest.<br />

</div><b>Sunday 29 May: </b>Managed IT Day: Ray Hobby is the sponsor for this week’s racing and plans are a foot for a big afternoon in the park this Sunday with his lovely wife Gayle. Ray has been putting in a lot of work to getting out website up and running, likewise Brad with the blog. Appropriately, given it will be the one year anniversary of Quincy’s farewell party celebrated in the boat shed last year, Whillie has cleaned out his cellar and sent down crates of wine sourced from highly regarded wine growing regions from across Australia. If will be a good afternoon to spend in the park/boat shed. That boat shed is like champagne on New Years Eve – alcohol goes to your head more quickly.<br />
<br />
<b>There is a god:</b> The reason we know this is that this photo of the Splashers serving up the beachside entertainment both before and during the start of the South Head Roughwater swim has materialised. Words were never going to do the spectacle justice although even a photo doesn’t capture the slow motion car crash desperation that marked the beginning of the end. The rest of the days’ events already went viral at the BSBLSC Ball last week. You can spot the three of them huddled around the boat. It was a sight.<br />
<br />
<b>Step Up:</b> We have some key Committee members taking leave of absence at various times this year. Not all have adhered to Splashers’ best practice provisions and informed us 24 months in advance like Mr Blades. Where there is risk, there is also opportunity so put your hand up if procurement, preparation or presentations are on your list of things you’d like to get involved with down at Splashers.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5874338218766951066.post-80689754079160349722011-05-16T11:34:00.000+10:002011-05-16T11:34:55.326+10:00Week Three Results - Favoloso DayResults 15 May 2011 - <a href="http://www.favoloso.com.au/">www.favoloso.com.au</a><br />

<b>8 May 2011:</b> Mother's Day was celebrated at the pool this week with a special Russell Family Day Mother/Child brace event. First prize went to Ben and Fiona Botella, which seems appropriate as they are actually related. The other relations, Liz and Kim Russell, had their fourth place compensated with a win for Liz in the 90 metre by 0.01 of a second. Very impressive.<br />
<br />
The Whilliers' results also show they clearly got more swimming done in Scotland than expected. The Committee met this week to plan the year's calendar of events. We have lawn bowls, Christmas in July, Club nights at the Legion Club once a month, Gala Day and a seafood extravaganza all on the agenda. Scott Carr is the Committee member recruit of the year after his call for a special day celebrating our 90 Year Anniversary with the 90 metre to be the premiere event that day. Also Splashers, remember, we have a committed gear manager in the form of Keith Blades who keeps us all sartorially resplendent so see him if you would like to be in club colours when you are in the pool, or stay warm with a Splashers jacket when you are not! The Committee is also putting in a lot of work to get as many members as possible travelling down to Wagga for 16 September National Winter Swimming Titles. Accommodation and transport arrangements are being made so see John Hobby our chief co-ordinator to lock in a spot. Next week is brought to us by our favourite local Café Favoloso. www.favoloso.com.au You will see on their website that they are looking for a kitchen hand! They are new sponsors so be sure to show your support and mention you are a Splasher when you visit. <a href="http://www.favoloso.com.au%20/">www.favoloso.com.au </a><br />

<b>Season Calendar </b><br />
A draft Season Calendar is attached further to the Committee meeting held this week. Please review and provide feedback to the Captain – particularly if your name appears as a sponsor!<br />

<b>Committee Meeting</b><br />
<b>Tuesday 3 May 2011</b><br />

<b><br />
</b><br />
<b>METTING COMMENCES 6.30 P.M.</b><br />
<b><br />
</b><br />
<b>ATTENDEES: Les Kay, Keith Blades, Emma Finnerty, Brad Preston, Scott Carr, Greg Geiges, Martin Palfrey, John Hobby Warren Whillier, Col McDermid</b><br />
<b>APOLOGIES: Kiel Smith (Council meeting), Matt Carter (waterpolo work commitments). </b><br />
<br />
Confirmation of club list of elected representatives 2011 – 2012: Col advised that due to oversight at the AGM we were running off the 2009 list of officials, and this resulted in Len Welsh being omitted for nomination as Social Secretary. Col had apologised to Len who was willing to stand and the current committee endorsed the appointments now shown on the Club records of elected office bearers.<br />
<br />
<b>Update on Annual Report: </b><br />
(a)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Emma advised that the list of elected office bearers has now been up dated on the annual report for 2010 - 2011 season and will be put on the website by Ray Hobby<br />
(b)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Emma advised that she has to submit the annual statement of accounts to the to the appropriate Government body and will do so next week<br />
(c)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Emma advised that Ray Hobby will make 2010-11 annual report available on our web site, and members can read and have access to it at that site. She also said that she had printed off some more hard copies as some members do not have access to the internet. Anyone wanting a hard copy she approach Emma.<br />
<br />
<b>Avenues of communication to members for this season.</b><br />
(a)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Spectator: It was agreed that our Publicity officers Emma and Brad see that a weekly report is put in the local paper to recognise our sponsors. Col noted that the first 2 weeks this had happened and that persons had commented on these reports in a positive way as it helps promote our sponsors. The photo’s in particular draw attention to our article. Thanks to Emma’s work so far in this regard.<br />
(b)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Web Site and Blog: The committee noted that Brad and Ray Hobby had done work on both these means of communication. The principal form of communication should be our web page www.brontesplashers.com.au or our blog http://brontesplashers.blogspot.com/ Discussions are taking place between Emma, Brad and Ray to see what is the best means of use of this media, to up date weekly events, race results, and display photos. The Committee thanked all of three persons for their hard work in this regard, as it brings in line with modern communication systems.<br />
(c)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Weekly Newsletter The committee agreed we should try and continue the weekly newsletter, as again it helps keep the club up to date on a weekly basis, especially for those that can not make it each week. It gives the race results and also promotes our sponsor for the day. Again the photo’s are great<br />
(d)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Sponsors Board at Beach: Keith has agreed to up date the board with our current sponsors and we all agree that it should be displayed each week for the public to see who supports our club. <br />
SEASONS PROGRAM<br />
<br />
(a)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>The committee discussed the make up of our yearly program, and discussed which sponsors had come on board for another season. A draft program was approved by the program. A few sponsors have to be followed up, but generally most weeks are filled: Emma is to confer with Warren and prepare the draft as agreed, and then send to the committee for comments before sending out to all members. It should be noted that the program is always subject to change, and new sponsors can always be accommodated<br />
<br />
(b)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Magnetic Swim program. A sample of Icebergs swim program which can be attached by magnet was on show but committee agreed that will not do one for our club, as our program is subject to change and the members have access to the internet to print out a program for the year if they want one.<br />
<br />
(c)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Updating program and results: Brad said he would confer with Emma and Ray to update the results each week on all of our communication sources, and could even do this on the day if he has his computer available, but at least can be updated early each week.<br />
<br />
(d)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>First Months Program (May of each Year) Les suggested that the first months sponsors and program should be put together before the season begins, to ensure all know of the events and to confirm all sponsors for that first month are on board or filled. Depending when AGM held this can be done by outgoing committee or if new committee have time to meet.<br />
<br />
(e)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Weekly Trophies. Keith advised the committee that it is not to be expected that the Club gear was always available or on hand to provide weekly trophies for sponsors. For example stocks are currently low, so the swim committee should confer with sponsors before their weekly swim to see if they have their trophy or they want the club to provide the items.<br />
<br />
(f)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>John Botella Sponsorship weekly Towels: Keith advised that John has again agreed to continue his sponsorship of the weekly 90 metre towels. John and his family have been a terrific financial support to our club over the years. Keith advised that last years stock had been used and that new ones were in the process of being ordered. The meeting agreed on the new colours of that towel.<br />
<br />
<b>NATIONAL TITLES WAGGA WAGGA</b><br />
Firstly a general discussion took place around the table about the venue, numbers expected to go, uniforms and accommodation before the following was determined.. It was generally agreed that until we know numbers it is hard to make any real firm plans.<br />
<br />
Accommodation: It was agreed that we take all accommodation currently available and booked at the William Farrar Hotel: This is accommodation for about 14 persons in beds but hotel has no problems in rooms sleeping more if they bring own blow up beds etc. Until we know numbers we can not say if this is enough or need more. Emma to confirm this accommodation arrangement.<br />
<br />
Transport. Brad and Scott had air fares that are currently available for flights. (current price about $120.00 one way) Rail transport vide XPT to Melbourne works out at $75.45 one way or $150.90 return (but less for those on senior cards) Hire of bus can not be explored at this stage but last time we took small bus to Stockton it worked out about $1200 for hire and petrol: (but this is longer) 7 hour drive. Col said some may drive and then stay on and play golf at some of the courses along the Murray before returning. All are viable options for travel but agreed to defer travel arrangements until we get definite numbers.<br />
<br />
Tour Co-Ordinator. John Hobby has agreed to be the co-ordinator for the trip, and will begin next week talking up the trip and inform members to contact him if they show an interest to go By our next meeting we should have a better idea of the interest being shown. Persons thinking of flying though should make their bookings privately as soon as possible, as we imagine the demands for these flights will be high, especially for the ones wanting to return to work for the Monday.<br />
<br />
Club Funding: Any question of funding or costs for individual members can not be settled at this stage until we know how many are going, so this issue deferred.<br />
<br />
Tour Uniform. Keith has indicated that he has a proposed rugby jumper that he is going to show members on Sunday. It was agreed that we will need some more T shirts: Sponsors will be sought for this trip, but again until numbers known we will have to defer that. Keith also noted that the cost of a lot of our uniforms are increasing for example - current swim caps and swimmers.<br />
<br />
<b>CATERING BBQ and PRICING:</b><br />
(A)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Price $5.00 lunch: General discussion took place about catering and the very very cheap lunch that is provided. It was generally felt that the club never intended to make a profit from this item: It was noted that the beer/wine prices were increased a few years ago to maintain the price. The balance sheet still shows this item comes out about square each year, so it was decided at this stage to keep the cost at that price HOWEVER it is expected that on large catering days eg pig on the spit and sea food days – that the price will rise accordingly, to cover these extra costs. It was noted it was still possible to maintain this level whilst ever we had the generous sponsors we still have.<br />
<br />
<b>GENERAL BUSINESS:</b><br />
(A)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>New Sponsors: It was noted that Favoloso Restaurant has again generously donated coffee vouchers to the value of $35.00 per week (which over 20 weeks amounts to $700.00 per year) which is a very generous offer. Thanks to Paul and Tracie Ryan for organising these vouchers. We have been using these as part of our weekly raffle we draw for those that attend the BBQ. So it really is a give away to members as no money is directly generated for the club. Col said that in recognition of their support he will sponsor this week’s swim in honour of Favaloso’s support. Trophies will be two food vouchers at their Restaurant. It was also noted that Brad is getting married in August and that he, Kiel and Scott will sponsor a day on 3rd July. It could be a buck’s day out.<br />
<br />
(B)<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Clubs Birth date/or when Founded:<span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"> </span>Discussion took place as to the year the club was founded. Our logo on our weekly Newsletters says 1924, but others believe the true date is 1921. Col produced 2008 – 2009 annual report which had an article on our history. He read it out:<br />
In an article in the paper around this period in 1921 it was reported as follows<br />
“At a meeting of the Splasher Club members presided over by Mr. Tom Cubitt,, a well know manager of boxers, it was decided to have impromptu lectures every Sunday morning, while members enjoyed their sun baking and swimming. The subjects to be chosen are to include both sporting and hints for handy men.<br />
Next Sunday Mr. Harry Kelso will speak on “how to play water polo” and Mr. Les Bond will give a short demonstration of how to keep clocks in good working order. As these members are experts in these matters, members may look forward to a pleasant hour. The subjects for subsequent lectures will be announced from time to time”<br />
<br />
Col said he would follow up the date and the article with Waverley library, and Les said he would investigate the Surf Club history book which also had some dates mentioned of the Splashers existence. If it was 1921, then this would be our 90th Year, which should be recognised:<br />
<br />
Scott Carr recommended that we should have a swimming event and promotion on the 7th August (Club Championship day and call the event “90 metres for 90 years swim” We should look for a sponsor as it could generate a lot of interest from some of the older and former members of the club to organise a reunion. At this stage we have pencilled in this celebration day into our calendar.<br />
<br />
MEETING ENDED: 8.30 p.m.<br />

SUNDAY 8 AUGUST<br />
<br />
Just as the forecast expected, it never rains on City to Surf day. Thanks to the life members who sponsored the prizes, one of which most appropriately went to life member Keith Blades.<br />
<br />
It just wouldn’t feel like a Sunday if we weren’t dolling out cash and prizes to Keith Blades - whether it be for feats of prowess on the bowling green, questionable cheap beer deals, or for the 90 metre. Adrian Booth isn’t a life member yet but let’s hope he is a longer term aspirant. Val and Peter are brimming with smiles as grandparent-hood beckons – we extend our congratulations. Congrats also to Paul Ryan for his Father of the Year nomination.<br />
<br />
The Splashers have no money to even pay the butcher, but we’re trying to stay calm about it. Everything hinges upon maintaining the loyal support of the Legion Club so we hope you can make it along this Friday to drum up their sponsorship. Col will be there.<br />

SUNDAY 19 SEPTEMBER<br />
<br />
At Saturday’s WSAA Meeting we have to submit our entries for the National Championships this year. If you want to be considered for a swim on 19 September, please write back to us with your name and date of birth. There will also be a small window of opportunity to submit your nomination in person on Sunday. Could you also let us know if you plan to attend the post swim function as we need to buy lots of dinner tickets that we probably won’t use.<br />

EASTERN SUBURBS LEGION CLUB FRIDAY 13 AUGUST<br />
<br />
The Eastern Suburbs Legion Club has always been the venue of choice for the Bronte Splashers. We don’t go there looking for cutting edge décor, glamorous clientele, or sycophantic service, for we know these qualities are hollow, fleeting and unrewarding! Instead, what we look for and what we always find at the Legion Club, is an inspired dose of optimism and a fulfilling sense of camaraderie, fun and light heartedness that lock in one’s sense of being part and parcel of a vibrant, giving and worthwhile community. All this plus daring dance floor manoeuvres! The thrilling highs of the meat tray game of chance! Fast paced social commentary!<br />
<br />
You can see why the Splashers choose to hang their hats there, and why, next Friday 13 August, the Splashers will be meeting to hold up and bar there, raise our flagging Legion Club profile, and drive the Splashers finances further into the red. See you there.<br />

Thanks to Neil Buchanan for Christmas in July at the Bowling Club. Everyone was super organised with action down on the blocks at least one hour ahead of schedule. Unfortunately this meant about half the club missed out on a swim…..better luck this week when we’ll revert to a more laid back pace.<br />
<br />
So, the bowling club. Things got fast paced on the bowling green with TAPE measures brought out to determine the winners, but Keith Blades was in winning form and no one else could get close.<br />
<br />
Negotiations to get Wally Boon back into the Club were finally successful!<br />
<br />
After our special celebration lunch, a decision was made to try and get the coffers up to scratch by inculcating the junior Splashers with a love of gambling. Didn’t quite work as planned, so we’re having a second attempt this Sunday with the introduction of SWIMBET.<br />
<br />
Recommendations for the Riverina tour are coming in, with – thanks to Paul Ryan - the William Farrer Hotel seemingly the place to stay at only $45 per night for a single room. We’ll have to be sure to consult with Bronwyn Ashley on all decisions as turns out she harks from the Riverina, or Berrigan, to be precise.<br />

Oh! The legs! The legs! As walking the city of Rome & Florence to all its Historical sights ,bars & restaurants takes some walking!<br />
<br />
We also had a great time in Turkey, Greece, and South Italy- Positano, Capri & the island of Ischia- water temperature around 24 deg & 36 deg air temperature. Have not found a Bad Beer yet and the Reds taste as good as if an Angel was pissing on your tongue.<br />
<br />
Off to the vine yards of Tuscany tomorrow which will make the tower of Pisa look ? Next stop Venice and the Gondalas before slipping into France.<br />
<br />
We believe the winter has not been kind & the water freezing so I guess the B.B.Q is still going strong.<br />

PLUMBER DOWN UNDER DAY: We’re a big fan of his work and on Sunday dividends were paid! Dolphins even came to visit which makes the best morning of the week even better. Big thanks to Angus/Michael O’Sullivan from Plumber Down Under. Keith was working double time on the blocks in the absence of Whillie – lucky he sends his family along including Mackenzie who ask the big questions about whether attendance at Icebergs is required to meet 100% attendance requirements – answer in the affirmative. Max Sayer took the towel, as did Adrian Booth from last week. Greig “Cheers Bar” Harvey teamed up with Nick Seale to win the Brace – don’t forget to tell your swim partner if you opt for the bbq over the semis – there were some forlorn faces about.<br />

</div><div><div>QUAY THERAPY DAY: Club Championships. Another reason to be at Presentation Day! Southern Metrops entries are in thanks to hours of political wrangling and complex calculations by Martin who made the hard decisions in the best interests of the Club. Relay teams are being coordinated so clear your diaries. List to be sent out with names of relay team members. It was only day THREE of being an Australian, but already that pervasive 'she'll be right' attitude had its grip on Len Welch. No show for his weekly breaststroke demonstration lap!</div><div><br />
</div><div> No show for his washing up responsibilities! Len, the washing up isn't a right, its a privilege! That said, all reports from the Ceremony were that your rendition of the National Anthem while playing a chair as a bagpipe was immensely moving. Fingers crossed we'll have some pictures soon.</div><div><br />
</div><div>Hot on the heels of Origin humiliation, inter state rivalry was compounded this Sunday. Rhonda was swimming with the St Kilda Serpents down in Victoria, Whillier made his dreams of being in Queensland widely known, and we're going to lose Annabelle for Icebergs day in favour of waterpolo in Victoria!</div><div><br />
</div><div>What was the other news? Oh, the Surf Club badge draw. Here's hoping that Estimates Committee isn't called to explain the repeat offending 100 each week on surf club donations. I am sure Sure SURE we will get a return soon. I mean, let's just catch a ride on Peter Ryan's luck. He walks into, ok, fair enough, we all know Peter doesn’t walk, he shambles, into South Juniors and scores himself $6000! Someone's in the know however, as two days into him having his licence back, a new TV show called RBT has started up. If they combine THAT footage with the C.X.H footage from last weekend, the Splashers are in for some major publicity.</div></div><div><br />
</div><div><div>Turning to the results in the 30 metres. Despite repeated assurances that she was 'only here for the bbq', this week's 30 metre saw first place awarded to Miss Ally Hunter. Given that the girl has gills, its not that surprising until you realise she has basically lost a second a week since the season started. So congratulations to her. Not just for her swimming, but for a charming acceptance speech in which she, clearly mindful of the relationship between our financial reserves and the quality of the prizes, first remembered to thank our sponsors!</div></div><div><br />
</div><div><div>Talking of sponsors leads us to the day the Bronte Splashers, Fast Skins, FINA, the WSAA and CONTROVERSY came to blows. Loyal members and sponsors both, Fiona Botella and Ms Quay Therapy Bours, met with the wrath of pool deck officials by appearing in their World Masters' Games suits for the Club Championships. They were both good sports about their disqualification and have now, appropriately, set their sights on New Dehli.</div></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5874338218766951066.post-13203681658102431172010-06-26T11:30:00.000+10:002010-06-26T11:30:19.713+10:00Bankrupt the Splashers long weekendRESULTS<br />

<b>PALFREY PLUMBING AND HOBBY PLUMBING:</b> Big thanks to Martin and JH for their concerted efforts to re-balance the books on Sunday, and for JH’s genius accounting which somehow made him think he was drinking for free! And of course to Col who put in a marathon catering effort on the day and then didn’t stop working until the sun was well gone on Sunday evening. It was a big day. First up, disappointments - there was someone with a video camera at the Charing Cross Hotel, and Graham Kerr and Brad Preston - our stalwart of the long weekend - were MIA. But in good news, there isn’t another long weekend until October, Les was down, Val Hoggett was in situ to receive her pink champagne, Peter Hoggett and Brian Russell remain friends after being entered in the same heat, Scott Carr has been signed on for another season as the face of David Jones, and John Hobby’s new status as a family man paid off as he did a few makeovers while his brother put his hand up to help (read ‘do everything’) with the website. Annabelle Carter successfully stared down the long arm of the law while her brother outwitted and outswam a field of Splashers that failed to walk the fine line between too slow and too fast in the Palfrey Skins Event! Some of the trailers were spared by break times, notably by Miss O’Grady who took our last female out of contention, but, as ever, it was a great spectator event, ably captured in photosby Rhonda. Len Welch was in fighting form to take out the 90 metre, after a week of late nights diligently reciting the Australian National Anthem in preparation for his impending citizenship ceremony tonight!<br />

<br />
<b>SOUTHERN METROPS</b><br />
Martin has been collecting names for interested Metrops participants for the past couple of weeks. If you’ve put your name down, and you’re entered and paid for, its always the icing on the cake if you come along ready to swim on the day. Martin + Band + Dance Floor = always worth a day at Icebergs.<br />

<b>JUNIOR RELAY:</b> With so many excellent Junior Splashers dominating the results these days, we’re calling upon parents to help us put together a ten a side Junior Relay over at Icebergs. Lily and Amy Delooze, Bella and Ally Hunter, Mackenzie and Jayden Whillier, Alex and Eleanor Ryan, Emily and Georgie Ryan, plus a multitude of others who perhaps are less shy and retiring, but just as fast and enthusiastic, put your hands up! We are putting our entries in on Monday 21 June so could all those dedicated parents let us know if they feel like traipsing over to Icebergs on Sunday 11 July before we put our entries in this Monday?<br />

<b>PALFREY SKINS 30 METRE + HOBBY PLUMBING 60 METRE + </b><b>PIPELINE PLUMBING 90 METRE </b>This Sunday all the Splashers favourite things come together: <b>PLUMBING</b> and <b>PUBLIC HOLIDAYS</b>. But we did still enjoy a glimpse of lady luck when the forecast cyclone failed to come our way on Sunday (although conditions were still rough enough to warrant dispensing with the lane ropes and to throw out everyone’s 90 metres). But luck had no role in the smashing triumph of Ms Vesper (vegemite toast for breakfast I bet) as she easily took out the 30 and 60 metre quinella. Maybe that isn’t the correct term, in fact, maybe that would mean that she came first and second in the same race? Greg? But if you won the 30, 60 and 90, wouldn’t you call that a trifecta? ENOUGH! But speaking of gambling, WHO’S THE PUNTER who decided to pay for their drinks with an April TAB ticket?! I will be heading to the green machine soon to check and, if we win, Ivory Pegasus can be our new mascot.</span> <br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">The starters did a great job down on the deck, managing time trial-ers and crashing waves, while Jayden kept his eye out for the endearingly diminutive Billy Hunter. Martin is probably not even hobbling after the 10km soft sand run at Bondi Beach, and the 50 Metres in the Nelune Foundation Relay. But maybe from the 1000 schooners he committed himself to after. Sorry to miss Keith M, but he was on football duties. Dave M has brought his daughter, Emma, back to the Splashers fold. Can Col lure his Emma back from NZ to do the same? </span> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>SPONSORSHIP</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">We have a few opportunities available in the Splashers calendar for 2010. Any new members who think that the $10 membership fee is in inverse proportion to the FUN and want to try their hand at running a day with prizes and events, put your hat in the ring. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>SUNDAY 6 JUNE</b> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">This Sunday will be brought to us by the Power Brothers from Carpet Biz and Carpet Power. Word is, they will be doing a carpet laying demonstration and setting us up with a presentation catwalk. And now they are committed to it. IF YOU NEED NEW FLOORING YOU CAN CALL THEM. Too easy! In their honour, we’ll have a special 90 metre event. Anything to make life harder for Angus. One lap form stroke and 2 laps freestyle – in that order. </span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space: pre;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>INJURIES</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;">It’s a tragic sight to watch Mr Welch breaststroke up the pool each Sunday, before he gets to the good part of the day (washing up). No one wants to hear the words rotator cuff. So there are some exercises attached (all the way from Western Australia where their favourite ocean swim is 20km!).</span> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>QUINCY UPDATE:</b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"> Update from Col McDermid on the Quinlan’s travels. Quincy and Karen have left Turkey. They were on that Turkish boat of relief workers that was raided by the Israeli's at sea the other night, but he is safe after warding off the troops and then acting as "negotiator" and using the "Quincy Code of Peace" he was able set up peace talks at the United Nations. Go the 'Quincy Code ' A true "freedom fighter".</span></div><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Dreary conditions met the 'true' Splashers last weekend but there was still a solid turnout to pay tribute to club legend, the late Kevin Walker.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">A big thank you to the extended Walker family for making the trip down and taking out the relay, good to see you all. Do be strangers now ya hear!</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">No real surprises in the results this week and the big names all featuring again. Whillier, Botella and Morrison all taking home the chocolates with impressive swims.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Along with paying tribute to a former club legend, the day was also a final goodbye for Brian and Karen Quinlan who trudged off over to Europe for an extended stay.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Mother nature seems to always throw obstacles in front of the Splashers on big weekends but once again we gave mother nature 'the bird' and came through with flying colours.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">A big thank you to Kiel Smith who shouted the bar when he forgot that he already paid his membership and deposited another $10 into the till. The crowd quickly devoured his extra $10 worth of beers and abused the hell out of him for it. This bloke was our former treasurer! He is still spitting venom about losing the tenner but me thinks he isn't short of a quid.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Another big thank you to the imbecile who made everyone who was still sitting in the boat shed skol icy cold red wine.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">I don't really remember who it was but I am going to blame Scott Geoffrey Carr.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">Don't forget if you haven't paid your membership then you will be fed scraps of this weekend's BBQ and you will have to to breaststroke in all of your races. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">And if i see anyone not paying their $2 swim donation there will be WWIII.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">I am sorry this is a rather short talk up but I am currently dealing with emails from so called 'Rugby League experts' who think Jason King should be in our Origin side for Game Two.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">You heard it first here, if he is selected I will be tempted to resign my position. He is a mutant.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><br />

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><b>16 May 2010: </b> Sharon wrote to the Splashers to express her thanks for running the memorial day. To quote Sharon: 'John would be thrilled. As John always said, the best people belong to the Winter and Summer Bronte Swimming Clubs.' Very true. The Splashers always give back when they can. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Kevin Walker Memorial Day: </b> Word is we’ll have some fierce competition in the pool this Sunday as the Walker family make themselves available for some relays. Be down early on Sunday to get your name down for a relay team. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Updates: </b>We still haven’t heard back from all our Sponsors to confirm they are happy with their proposed day. The Committee is working hard to bring a range of different ideas to the events calendar this year and an array of new prizes are being ordered this week. There is a push on to have Committee meetings moved to Friday nights so we can leave a paper-trail across the bars of Bronte. At least that way someone somewhere will be able to do the Minutes. If you want to be in the running for a Splashers prize, make sure you’re financial (the main reason for this is insurance and a new cross checking process is being instigated by those dogs with a bone Ryan and Hobby). PS: the $2 swim entry fee each week for each swimmer (not each race – bargain!) remains payable in Australian decimal currency only. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>The Quinlans: </b>Brian and Karen are jetting off overseas and this is their last weekend for a while down at Splashers. Don’t expect to see everyone’s favourite lemon chicken for a while, but don’t plan anything for Sunday afternoon either, as we all put in a last ditch effort to decipher the Code and buy Quincy a drink. The man deserves to be shouted a thousand for his superlative work on the BBQ. Also there's 11,000 reasons to kick onto the surf club after putting a dent into the Splashers reserve stocks. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Don't forget to vote on the polls. The big questions need answering.</div></div></div></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5874338218766951066.post-88863286551265351592010-05-14T18:12:00.001+10:002010-05-14T18:13:35.498+10:00<div class="MsoNormal">OH YEAH!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">It is good to be back Splashers!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">As I chow down on my oversize bowl of popcorn I ask myself is there any better way to spend a Sunday than to head down to Splashers swim the obligatory three laps (the 90 is for dribblers) and then gorge myself on some of the finest cuisine money can buy?</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">If there is, I don’t want to know about it because Splashers already has me won!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Firstly, a big thanks to the Russell family for sponsoring the day. Love your work.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Another beautiful day met the faithful for the Mothers day instalment of Splashers 2010 and wasn’t it a ripper.<br />
<br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">The traditional mother-child race was hotly contested with the Russell family even importing their Kona bound daughter Kim for the race. Okay, maybe importing is a big stretch but Kim used to be a regular till she moved down to the ‘vortex’ which is the Shire. Soon she will be wearing St George jerseys and explaining to anyone who will listen how the Dragons don’t ‘choke’ there is just a conspiracy against them or some other run of the mill excuse which those muppets come up with. Come back to the light Kim! Come back to the light!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Yours truly lost the results sheet last week after falling asleep on the couch watching the Roosters show just how awful they are against the hapless Cowboys. I awoke to drool all over my face and the results sheet MIA. So I’ll do my best.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Off the top of my head I know some cheat got 0.00 in the 90 metres. Seriously, turn it up. From memory it was a relatively new member as well. Many believe once you have achieved the dead on then you ascend to another place where you no longer adhere to time and space. Hope you have a nice trip! Say hello to Barry White for me mate. In all seriousness congratulations but you have in no way changed my mind about attempting the 90 metres!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Rex Smith and James Vesper took out the brace which makes me think that someone doctored last week’s website poll results of who is the biggest fox. Kiel Smith was a clear winner but we all know who the best is. I wonder who doctored the poll?</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Don Campbell won the 60 metres and to his credit he nearly swam through the wall on the final lap. I hope the win was worth it Don because you’ll now have to make up another second. Sucker.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">This Sunday is Cracka Hardy Memorial Day. I encourage all punters to get down and pay tribute to a man who truly embodied the spirit of the Bronte Splashers. I didn’t know him intimately but I toured with the man. On many occasions he had to deal with a bus load of drunken invalids abusing him for his driving. Looking back I think Cracka just wanted to get the team home safely.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">So get down, raise a glass, or a thousand, to one of the great Splashers. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Another big thank you must also go to the men on the BBQ. Your service is normally lost in a haze of noodles and sausage but to you I tip my hat.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Just don’t make the same mistake as I always do punters and fill up on sausages! </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5874338218766951066.post-58916142205527839292010-05-07T12:12:00.004+10:002010-05-07T12:21:17.245+10:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAWAVnzX27Wxbnxwszj1q_27XtA4fdM9mxZwZF9MSOE11L6chXO6-BGn8oWNirWLqTsZJR2NXgsrwqOfJM-nBeCkHvQQJ4UNUaWntOzEKGcLrnfwoi4SjsyuXcfEUQZwyMiqcaYVhDgjxg/s1600/Splashersheader.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="85" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAWAVnzX27Wxbnxwszj1q_27XtA4fdM9mxZwZF9MSOE11L6chXO6-BGn8oWNirWLqTsZJR2NXgsrwqOfJM-nBeCkHvQQJ4UNUaWntOzEKGcLrnfwoi4SjsyuXcfEUQZwyMiqcaYVhDgjxg/s400/Splashersheader.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><b>Sunday 2 May 2010 – SEASON OPENER</b><br />

<b>2 May 2010: </b>Welcome to all the new members who saw 100 competitors in the pool on Sunday, and to all the old members looking like new again. Thanks for all those who paid their membership fees, and a special thanks to Neil Buchanan Garden Care who made his sponsorship donation 2 months in advance (we will invest this money wisely in our special 0.05% interest account!). We have a new Committee (see photo of Ass.Social Secretary and Handicapper attached) and an exciting year of events lined up. First among these is a possible trip to the Bronte Bowling Club in place of the usual bbq in the park. Support for this is still being canvassed, so put your hand up or down if this typeof event interests you. Everyone should have fond memories (or perhaps no memory at all) of the presentation day at the BBC a few years back. As for the foxes, Max (see results above), we are watching you!<br />
<br />
<b>Mothers Day:</b> This Sunday there will be a special Mothers Day brace (featuring of course, Mothers and theirchildren). If you do not have a child, but would like to go in the brace, there are usually spare kids wandering aroundso perhaps you can borrow one? Or some mothers might have more than one child, in which case, you might wish toapply, for a small fee, for temporary parenting rights? Anyway, Martin will set out the rules - expect them to be ironclad.<br />

We look forward to confirming dates with all our sponsors and introducing our new Committee members. 2010 is set to be a big year with a rotating feast of special events and celebrations, we might even fit in a bit of swimming.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal">This is disappointing for the Splashers who voted in favour of the change and were looking forward to hosting some regional and interstate clubs at Bronte on the Sunday. It is also a damning indictment of the way in which the WSAA continues to be dragged down by recalcitrant and outdated clubs that are tiresome, staid bastions of male chauvanism and chronic conservatism.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Anyway, quick invite from the Captain for all Splashers to attend this Sunday's Anzac Day Memorial March along the promendade at Bronte Beach. The March starts 10.30am sharp. Maddy will play the last post again followed by toasting of Anzac day in the surf club. (we donate one of the kegs).</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
